John M. Carroll

John Caroll

John M. Carroll is Principal Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Hong Kong, where he directs the MA programme in Hong Kong History and teaches courses on the history of Hong Kong, the British Empire, museums, and tourism. He has published widely on the history of Hong Kong and on the British community in early-nineteenth century China. Raised in Florida, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, Carroll received his BA from Oberlin College, his MA from the University of Iowa, and his PhD from Harvard University. He has also taught at the University of Texas at Austin, the College of William and Mary, and Saint Louis University. Carroll is the chair and co-founder of the Society for Hong Kong Studies and serves on the board of the Hong Kong International Literary Festival.
